We are all shocked by the news
The news that we keep hearing changes by the day and sometimes, by the hour. We don’t know what reports to follow or who to believe. This current situation appears to be rapidly changing the world we live in.
Our own emotions and thought patterns are being tossed around with the never ending news cycle. Sometimes, it may be anger, frustration, confusion or fear. Though we cannot specifically change our circumstances and we feel even less ability to control them, we can control our reactions and our attitudes.
So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. 1 Peter 1:13
Our children are watching
As I quietly read and listen to the news reports my own heart could easily become dismayed. Because of that, I am a filter for my children. I do want them to understand that our daily life has some changes going on that affect them. I also want them to understand that God knew these days would be part of our lives and that we can always trust Him.
Of course, the ages of our children will dictate what information we relay to them. The truth is, they know that something’s up! This is a good time to teach through life lessons as much as we are able.
Facts and opinions are pouring out from many sources. The memes being generated, though hilarious, illustrate that Americans are struggling with remaining calm.
I can panic and live motivated by worry or I can control my response. As a mom with little eyes watching, I will choose to prayerfully move forward in word, deed, action and in truth.
I will also, with the strength of the Holy Spirit, control my attitude. I have been disappointed, confused and have had some momentary fear. I think this is common. But, as I look at scripture I am renewed. As I connect with my Heavenly Father through prayer, I find peace. As I resolve to do those things as well as live life with some normalcy, I will teach my children to weather the storms of life.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
I will teach practical things
Importance of hygiene and hand washing skills
To conserve on certain physical supplies (TP, groceries, etc)
To cook & bake
To clean up (dishes, counters, bathrooms, floors)
To make good use of their time
To continue on with learning, even when it is not assigned
To use inside voices inside
To run around outside when the sun is shining
I will train character
To share their concerns with one another
To be an encouragement to one another
To look out for others
To share what they have
To look for opportunities to serve
To live in peace with family members
To pray when they are discouraged or afraid
To be thankful in all circumstances
I will direct to Jesus
Let not your hearts be troubled, Believe in God; believe also in me. John 14:1
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever. Psalm 146:5-6
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ Or ‘What shall we drink?’ Or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Matthew 6:31-34
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7
Putting together a plan of action
It’s too easy to spend our days caught up in independent activities. I sat down this afternoon and put together a list of things that will keep us busy over the next few weeks. Things that will build practical skills, instill character and direct my children to Jesus. Some of my kids gave suggestions too! Maybe you want to print off a copy of my activity list and give it a try. If you need more ideas to keep little ones busy, take a peek at this.
If you could use some extra encouragement through scripture and prayer, you will love reading this post from my friends over at Praying Christian Women.
I want to hear how things are going at your house! Tell me what you are doing to pass the time and have fun with your family.
Weekends may be different, just for the sake of variety. But, on weekdays we will be checking off some fun activities in addition to our homeschool lessons.
